BALLOON WINE A Picture, A Story & A Recipe MadeWithBalloons™

The picture above is my rendering of an overflowing bottle of champagne made with balloons by Vyacheslav Andrienko. His design is a carefully constructed composition of twisted balloons. He made a fine job of it. You may see his original photo in his Facebook photo album.
I enjoyed the task of rendering his creation as a digital painting. I consider it a very special form of graphics MadeWithBalloons™. Some of the softness of the balloons is lost in the drawn character of the bottle, but you can almost taste the subtle colorings and texture of fine wine flavors in the texture, colorings and transparent shading of this still life. I hope you enjoy the taste of this champagne image MadeWithBalloons™ and the flavor of the story and the balloon wine below.
Two elderly ladies entered Mary's specialty shop. Mary featured both "previously owned" children's clothes and new balloons to entertain the children that came in with their parents.
The two visitors looked at each other and then quickly around the shop. It was not the look of someone searching for the right section of clothes. It was more the look of someone trying to assure themselves that no one was watching. It led Mary to wonder if they were planning to steal something or if they were "on the lam". Maybe they had come in to hide out for a while.
"No. No. Surely my imagination is running wild," Mary thought. But, still, she was a little concerned.
The two wandered about for a while. Then they finally came up to Mary.
One of them whispered, "We would like some balloons."
Mary whispered back, "What kind would you like?" Mary had automatically lowered her voice in response to the visitor's quiet and secretive tone.
Mary thought to herself, "Balloons?" Now she was more curious than afraid.
"Penny balloons," one of the ladies replied. "You know, the big round ones."
The other lady extended her arms and hands as if she were holding either side of a balloon about a foot wide.
"Well, it has been a long time since balloons cost just a penny, but we do have quite a few to choose from in that size. What color would you like? And, how many?," Mary asked as she walked toward the balloons.
"Just three," came the response from one.
"And the color doesn't matter," added the second.
"Would you like those on a string or on a colorful ribbon?," continued Mary as she picked up three balloons and stepped toward the helium cylinder.
The ladies giggled to themselves. "No strings or ribbons, please. We have our own way to inflate them," said one.
"And to deflate them as well," mumbled the other one to herself.
"No fancy wrapping either," spoke up the first. "One of those little brown bags will do nicely."
The ladies paid for their three, uninflated, large, round, "Penny", balloons in the brown paper bag and were ready to leave when Mary's curiosity got the best of her. Mary went up close to the ladies and whispered; "If you don't mind my asking, what are you going to do with those balloons?"
The ladies glanced around with that same searching look they used when they first entered Mary's shop. They stepped even closer to Mary and said in a quiet but distinctly resolved tone; "We are going to make Balloon Wine."
"Our family has never allowed us to buy alcoholic beverages of any kind, but we have this recipe and we mix up a batch of our own about twice a year. It's pretty good."
"I didn't know you could make wine with balloons," Mary said. "How do you do that?"
"Well," the first lady revealed, "as the wine ferments, the balloon inflates from the gasses. When the balloon goes down again, the wine is ready. But ,I usually give it a few extra days just to be sure."
"I do happen to have an extra copy of the recipe with me," said the second. "You may have it if you promise not to tell anyone where you got it.""OK," said Mary. "And, here. Take a couple of extra balloons on me." The women traded prizes and Mary kept their secret for a very long time. ------------------------------------ That original recipe for balloon wine has been lost somewhere in the ensuing thirty years along with contact between the shop owner and the secretive pair. But, here is another recipe for Balloon Wine that I uncovered online. I pass it on for your experimentation and enjoyment (at your own risk). "This is an easy recipe for homemade wine. You can choose whatever flavor you like but my favorite is the red. You will need a sterile milk jug, a large latex balloon and a rubber band to complete the project. This Wine is a bit stronger than regular table wine. It's great for cooking as well as drinking."
- (1) .25 ounce package of active dry yeast
- (4) cups of sugar
- (1) 12 fluid ounce can of frozen juice concentrate; any flavor except citrus, thawed (Use a frozen juice concentrate without added sweeteners for best results.)
- (3.5) quarts of cold water, or as needed
- Combine the yeast, sugar and juice concentrate in a gallon jug. Fill the jug the rest of the way with cold water. Rinse out a large balloon, and fit it over the opening of the jug. Secure the balloon with a rubber band.
- Place jug in a cool dark place. Within a day you will notice the balloon starting to expand. As the sugar turns to alcohol the gasses released will fill up the balloon. When the balloon is deflated back to size the wine is ready to drink. It takes about 6 weeks total.
